Meditation has been practiced since the beginning of humanity and is arguably the single most important practice that any person can do to improve their life.
When you think of meditation, you might picture a monk sitting in lotus position on a mountaintop, or a hippie with their eyes closed, humming to themselves.
Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years and is arguably the single most important practice that any person can do to improve their life in all areas.
The truth is that regular meditation, in combination with various practices and certain techniques, there are truly no limits to the benefits that can be attained.
As a matter of fact, it would be impossible to list all the potential benefits because meditation helps in all areas of ones life.
Here are few just for fun:
stress relief
better sleep and reduced insomnia
reduced anxiety and/or depression
eliminate phobias or fears
reduced physical and/or emotional pain and trauma
accelerated healing
greater self-love, compassion, and empathy
increased inspiration, creativity, passion, and purpose
ability to focus and improved learning and retention
build better relationships
greater confidence and sense of self
increased intuition and better decision making
faster manifestation of dreams and goals
... and we are not even scratching the surface.
Any one of these factors can lead to a happier and more fulfilled life that not only impacts you, but also everyone around you in a positive way.
All those benefits are just symptoms of the number one reason for meditation in the first place. To stop, take a break, go inwards and develop and strengthening the single most important relationship you will ever have. The relationship with yourself.
Regardless of what you believe, where you live, the circumstances or situations you are faced with, you and only you have the power to change your life.
Without having a certain sense of self there is no way that you can tap into your unlimited potential and realize your dreams. Most people have a lousy relationship with themselves, and then wonder why their lives look the way it does.
No course, no program, no amount of science, or prayer, can substitute you understanding yourself better and realizing that who you think you are, and who you truly are, are not at all the same.
Science has been able to demonstrate measurable changes in one’s neurology, and even changes in genes and DNA from meditation.
Imagine consciously being able to change defects in your genes and DNA.
This is proven science. It is why meditation can be attributed to so many positive benefits, besides actually giving your body, mind, and spirit time to truly relax, let go, and to find harmony and balance from the ever-stressful wear and tear from our modern lifestyle.
Meditation is thought to work by effecting the brain and the nervous system. For example, one study found that regular meditation was associated with increased gray matter density in the hippocampus, an area of the brain that is important for memory and learning thereby helping those that have learning disorders and difficulties with retaining new information.
Another study found that mediation reduced activity in peoples “default mode network,” an area of the brain that is active when a person is not focused on a specific task. It is where the habitual programming is stored and run.
When meditating this reduced activity, allows one to override, and implant different habits and programming with greater ease, thereby decreasing self-sabotage and procrastination. This has also been linked with improved focus and attention and has helped people with ADHD turn it into a superpower.
Just 5 days of consecutive meditation shows visible changes in EEG readings and brain scans. Best of all, meditation doesn’t cost you anything. I know of plenty of people (mostly clients) that have eliminated life-long medication prescriptions just by adding meditation into their daily routine.
Other studies have shown a reduced risk of heart disease and stroke, increase in natural immunity, decreases in inflammation, and reduced body aches and pain.
If you're looking to add meditation to your daily routine, there are a few things to keep in mind. While there are many forms of meditation including guided ones, or using mantras, and some with specific processes and goals in mind, the essence is basically always the same.
Sit down comfortably, breath rhythmically, go within, and let go. The most common mistake is to think that you must silence the mind. While that might be a desired outcome and a result of meditation, should never be forced and is not the goal.
The goal is to give expression and thereby let go of the reason why your mind is racing in the first place. Trying to repress or suppress anything, including emotions, only leads more difficultly later on.
Our thoughts race because of the undealt with thoughts, feelings, and emotions.
Regardless of where you start, eventually you want to get to the point where you can meditate anywhere, anytime, without the need for external processes, sounds, or recordings... because meditation is a communication tool, first and foremost... and communication best happens in silence.
As a beginner, it is important to be patient and consistent. Meditation is a practice, and like any practice, it takes time and effort to master, but in this case, the results will be far greater and far more profound than you could ever imagine. You owe it to yourself to give it a try. What have you got to lose?
